Monday 6:36 Hurley's Antarctica photography

These days, thanks to science, documentaries and tourism, Antarctica is increasingly familiar to all of us. But it was far more mysterious when, just under a hundred years ago, Australian photographer Frank Hurley joined the expeditions of Douglas Mawson and Ernest Shackleton. His photographs and films of Antarctica fascinated the public at the time, especially the images of Shackleton's ship The Endurance which was caught, crushed and eventually sunk by the ice. His work remains an awe-inspiring testament to the efforts and courage of the men behind these expeditions, and to Hurley's own artistry. A new book called Frank Hurley's Antarctica combines many of his images with extracts from his diaries. It has been written by photographic historian and ANU professor Helen Ennis.

Adding to the tragedy, agencies say many of the most vulnerable people in Pakistan are falling prey to people traffickers.

Monday 7:37 Who will Tony Windsor choose?

The parliamentary deadlock following the federal election has dragged on into a third week. But relief is in sight, with the three country independents expected to announce their decision if not today then almost certainly tomorrow. That's according to the member for New England Tony Windsor, who spent the weekend at home in his NSW electorate talking to people, fielding hundreds of phone calls and, when he needed a break from it all, taking time out on the ride-on mower. Today he will lay his cards on the table in a meeting with Rob Oakeshott and Bob Katter.
